Jorge Ayarza: Low cost test bench construction for testing turbines up to 3kw
Testing a turbine before it is installed on a tower is a fundamental necessity, especially when building different sizes and designs. For this purpose in India we set about building a universal test bench for Hugh Piggott turbines. Our aim was for ease of installation, flexibility and low cost. We built a metal frame with wood supports for vibration dampening. The drive consists of a 4hp variable speed motor that is connected to the turbine using v belts and pulley. The brain of the device consists on a wattmon data logger capable of multiple inputs and outputs. Our first tests consisted on testing the new 2.7 kW turbine as a waterpumper.
